Boasting a stylish crystal mirror-finish, the new flash-based MP3 players look set to keep even the tightest of trousers unruffled, with the sleek-n’slimline beasties measuring just 8.9mm thick and weighing a mere 65 grams.

The players come in four natty shades – silver, blue, black and lead grey – with the Sharp MP-B200 offering 512MB of flash memory and the top of the range MP-B300 coming with 1GB memory.

To keep music mad punters fully stocked with tunes while on the move, both players offer extra capacity in the shape of a miniSD slot, with the audio player offering WMA-DRM and MP3 file format support.

MP-B200 and MP-B300 MP3 Players From SharpThe measurements of the MP-B200 and MP-B300 are 49 x 87.6 x 8.9mm – pretty damn small, but positively bun-scoffing compared to 6.8mm thickness of the Apple iPod.

No news of pricing or UK availability yet, but it should be in Japanese stores from next month.

LG Launches MFJM53 Nano-Like MP3 PlayerIt may not have the swish designer lines of the iPod and the name may roll off the tongue as smoothly as a mouth full of dry nuts, but LG Electronics new MFJM53 MP3 player looks more than a bit useful.

Boasting a huge 30-hour battery life that smacks the botty of the iPod and sends it home to bed, the 8GB MFJM53 is compatible with the PlaysForSure digital rights management (DRM) technology, offering integration with subscription services such as Napster and Rhapsody, which use Microsoft’s DRM.

The player also supports MP3, WMA, WAV, Ogg, MPEG4, and ASF music files, as well as MPEG4 video encoded in AVI files with support for JPEG pictures and text files.

Bringing up the impressive multimedia feature set is an on board microphone, a line-in port for recording, an FM radio and a mysterious new feature described on their website as ‘Music Theraphy’ (sic).

Touchy touchy
The MFJM53 sports a large-ish 1.77-inch, 262K, 60 X 128 pixels OLED screen which gets one over its rivals by being touch-sensitive, boasting ‘Index Finger Navigation’ (great for developing that ‘smudgy screen’ look).

The LG is a pocketable number too, weighing 88g and measuring 10.1 x 4.8 x 1.4cm.

Although we like the look of this fella – the feature set particularly impresses – the lack of a scroll/clickwheel is going to seriously hamper its ability to challenge the dominance of the uber-iPod.

Moreover, the marketing geniuses who dreamt up a name so instantly unmemorable as ‘MFJM53’ needs a thwack in the Oggs for their stupidity.

Why dream up a name that’s near impossible to remember when one of the strengths of your greatest rival is its easy-to-remember product name? The fools!

Anyhow, crap name aside, LGs new – what was it called again? – ah, yes, MFJM53 player will be available in just black and white, with pricing and availability to be announced.

Japan Gets Sony Ericsson W42S 3G Walkman PhoneSony Ericsson has announced its first Walkman phone for Japan today and it looks like a beaut.

Due to be launched by Japanese wireless carrier KDDI in June, the W42S 3G packs a hefty 1GB of internal memory backed up by a Memory Stick Pro DUO expansion slot offering up to 4GB of storage.

The new Walkman phone comes with a power saving mode to keep the tunes pumping for up to 30 hours of playback, with the onboard player supporting MP3, AAC, AAC+ and eAAC+ music format files.

As a result of a partnership with KDDI, owners can gorge themselves on a feast of top tunes when they’re on the move, thanks to their LISMO music service which currently boasts a mighty 5 million downloads per month.

The phone also comes with a 1.3 megapixel camera, a 2.2-inch, 240 x 320 pixels, 262k colour LCD screen, an FM radio and an Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) to keep punters well-fed with programming schedules.

Tesco Stocks Up On MP3 PlayersSitting right next to the baked beans and cornflakes at a Tescos near you soon should be Tesco’s new range of cheapo MP3 players.

Built and branded by bulk electronics firm Technika, the seven new players are aimed at the cheapskate end of the market, with prices starting at a mere £18.

Although the design is unlikely to get iPod whizzkid Jonathan Ive waking up in a lather of midnight sweat, the players seem attractive enough, offering a simple, solid construction.

The range starts with the 18 quid MP-806 player – which only manages just 128MB of flash memory – with the top end MP-806 player cranking the memory all the way up to, err, 1GB for £50.

Tesco Stocks Up On MP3 PlayersThe interface is bog standard but straightforward – there’s not much to get confused about here – and the player connects to desktops via a USB interface.

What little specs we could find say the players support MP3s and WMA files bought from download shops, although we couldn’t find any of the models listed on Microsoft’s ‘play for sure’ Website.

Tesco Stocks Up On MP3 PlayersTesco are no stranger to this MP3 thing, launching an online music store back in November 2004, offering 500,000 tracks which can be downloaded for 79p, with albums costing £7.99.

The company also offers a sizeable range of MP3 players, including Toshiba, Sony, Archos and Philips, with models available by mail order or from their 200 Tesco ‘Extra’ stores.

MTV and Microsoft Take On iTunes With 'Urge'Apple’s hugely popular iTunes music download service looks set to face some mighty competition in the coming months.

Although many contenders have tried to take on Apple’s market leading music download business, all of have left with a bloody nose – but the arrival of a new service by a powerful pair of rivals could be Apple’s biggest battle yet.

The new ‘Urge’ service sees industry titans Microsoft and music video monsters MTV Networks teaming up to offer a heavyweight contender to iTunes.

Unlimited downloads
Like Apple’s service, buyers will be charged 99-cents per song download, but there’s an added twist: users subscribing $9.95 a month will be able to download unlimited songs from Urge’s 2-million-song catalogue to their personal PCs.

Hoping to succeed where Napster, Yahoo, RealNetworks’s Rhapsody and even Microsoft’s own MSN service have failed, the partnership of the world’s biggest software company and the marketing might and ‘cool’ of MTV could prove a formidable challenge to iTunes.

“They are probably the strongest contender to come into the market for some time,” commented Phil Leigh, a senior analyst for Inside Digital Media, in Florida.

Geoff Harris, product unit manager for Windows Media Player at Microsoft, pointed out that although that other music subscription services have millions of songs on tap, that didn’t help listeners discover new tunes that they might like.

MTV and Microsoft Take On iTunes With 'Urge'Noting that consumers have embraced satellite radio because it features dozens of channels with music chosen by experts, Harris reckoned that this could prove a real advantage to the Urge service.”You’ve got the experts in music here from MTV doing programming across a whole bunch of genres,” he commented.

As well as music files, subscribers to Urge will be able to download video streams of MTV Network programs, including shows from MTV, VH1, and CMT, a country music video channel. Yee-hi!

Sod the iPod
But there is a serious fly in the MP3 ointment for the new Urge service: crazily, its music downloads won’t be playable on the Apple iPod, despite the player hogging around 70 percent of the market for portable music players. Instead, users will have to invest in rival players like those from Creative Technology.

MTV and Microsoft Take On iTunes With 'Urge'Although Harris admitted that the iPod incompatibility issue was “a hurdle that we have to get over” (an understatement, we reckon!), he added that, “there’s a long way to go in this market,” pointing out that the zillions of iPods sold still represent a fraction of the potential audience for music downloads.

Jason Hirschhorn, MTV Networks’ chief digital officer, insisted that Urge wasn’t interested in taking on Apple.’It’s not about beating Apple, it’s not about beating Rhapsody,” he said, pointing out that MTV has already teamed up with Apple elsewhere to flog some of its TV shows as downloads on the iTunes site.

Although Urge is wholly owned by MTV Networks, Microsoft has committed ample resources to the service, embedding the software in its new Windows Media Player 11 beta, a spruced up upgrade to its media software offering iTunes-like integration.

The new player adds browsing by album cover and a search box to find media as well as offering improved content management, with less clicks needed to burn a CD, for example.

Urge will only be available initially in the United States, with the beta player linked to US-only music stores until the final version of Windows Media Player 11 is released.

Jonathan Arber, a research analyst with Ovum in London has high hopes for the service, “I think there’s a real chance we will see them become the top of the second tier below Apple.”

Assuming the thing is stable and doesn’t come with a zoo-full of bugs, of course.

Pantech PG-3600v Phone Adds Video EditingStraight out of the school of Advanced Homage to iPods comes this new music phone from South Korean phone maker Pantech.

Featuring a (ahem) “revolutionary touch-wheel sensor,” the phone is aimed at “digital generation” music fans, with 512 Mb internal memory capacity supported by an external card slot for maximum onboard tunes.

Arriving on the shelves of Hong Kong and Taiwan stores today, the phone features a slide-out keypad design, a 1.9in, 262,144-colour display and the not-at-all-like-the-iPod clickwheel, which “enables easy navigation by allowing users to sweep the wheel key with their fingers”, according to Pantech.

As well as operating the music controls, the circular control can be used to control menu bars, zoom in on images taken with the phone’s built-in 1.3-megapixel camera and to skip through MPEG 4 videos recorded on the Pantech.

Uniquely, there’s some basic video editing software on board for users to create Fellini-like mini epics on their phones.

Research firm In-Stat estimates that MP3 player unit sales will rocket to 286 million by 2010, way up from last year’s 140 million sales.

Battery life slips down to a still-impressive 100 hours when using WMA DRM files.

The player includes an FM Tuner, voice recorder with built-in microphone and comes in 512MB, 1GB, 2GB storage capacities.

Suggested retail price for the 2-GB MP3s are $129.99 (£71, €103) and $159.99 (£87, €126), respectively.

Napster Offers Two Million Free Tunes

In an attempt to grab a bigger slice of a music download market currently dominated by Apple’s iTunes, Napster is letting users gorge themselves on the 2,000,000+ tracks in their bulging catalogue. All for free.

Sounds too good to be true?

Well, there is a big catch: songs can’t be downloaded – only streamed – and you can only listen to a song five times before you have to buy it for 99 cents or sign up for a monthly subscription.

Napster’s new service certainly trumps rival RealNetwork’s Rhapsody program, whose punter-luring, free streaming music offer only extends to a miserly 25 songs per month.

How it works
The freebie web-based service uses a Flash application to provide a basic music player interface along with windows for album art and the inevitable advertising.

Working on Flash-enabled Windows, Macintosh, and Linux machines, there’s no need to install any specific software.

Pirate downloaders looking to sneakily snaffle the freebie music will be disappointed to learn that the streamed music is of lower-quality than Napster’s commercial offerings.

Napster CEO Chris Gorog was keen to draw parallels with his company’s once infamous past, “This is the closest we have ever come to the original vision of the Napster service that swept the world in 1999 – except now, it’s legal.”

Gorog believes the boom in online advertising will pay dividends for Napster’s new advertising-supported business model, noting that their website currently averages 2 million visitors a month.

Napster’s service works with selected players from iriver, Creative, Dell, Samsung, Gateway and others but, crucially, not Apple’s iPod, which enjoys a thumping 77.6% market share, according to the NPD Group.

The phones individually clip over each lug’ole and have what looks like a rubberised band to ensure that they stay firmly clamped on your nut as you rock out to the Waterboys in your shower.

We couldn’t find any information about how waterproof these things are, so we’re not sure if scuba divers will be able to hum along to Wet Wet Wet while swimming around in an octopus’s garden or if they’re only good for singing in the rain.

Of course, beach boys on a surfin’ safari might appreciate the waterproofing as could sunbathers on a rockaway beach.

Coming in a choice of white or silver finishes, the units seem to be solidly constructed and reasonably spec’d, providing 100dB/1mW sound pressure and a frequency range of 20Hz to 20kHz.

Pioneer SE-22 Waterproof HeadphonesOf course, there’s no point having waterproof headphones if your player gets slippery when wet, so anyone looking to go surfin’ USA might be interested in checking out the range of waterproof iPod/iriver cases from h2o Audio.

Their gear isn’t cheap, but if you like to hear music while you’re out in rain (purple, or otherwise), jumping in the sea or blowing bubbles in the bath, it may be worth splashing out (ouch!) for the solid protection.

As for availability, we’re sorry to say we’ve no idea when or if the Pioneer headphones will be released over here in little ol’ Brit-land.

Skype Scoops Up EMI Music DealUber music giants EMI Music Publishing have announced a deal with hotshot VoIP upstarts Skype to sell music on Skype’s new retail website.

Skype’s new international digital music service will make tunes from EMI’s hefty catalogue legally available on a worldwide basis.

When it comes to songs, EMI – the world’s largest music publisher – has tons of the puppies (we’re talking over a million copyrights), including drunken karaoke favourites like ‘New York, New York’, ‘Singing in the Rain’ and ‘Over the Rainbow.’

The deal includes downloads, ringtones and subscriptions, with EMI Music Publishing being employed as a music consultant for the new service.

The deal is significant as it’s the first major online music deal to be agreed on a global basis – previously, music retailers had to laboriously license songs individually on a country-by-country basis.

Skype Scoops Up EMI Music DealRoger Faxon co-CEO of EMI Music Publishing was ready and willing for some Monday morning gushing, dishing out the kudos to Skype, EMI and composer royalty collectors the MCPS-PRS Alliance for their help.

“We could not have better partners than Skype and MCPS-PRS in our ongoing effort to break down the barriers of online licensing of music. EMI is committed to bringing the best music in the world to all the consumers of the world and this deal is a major step in fulfilling that goal,” he gushed.

Skype is yet to set a launch date for its new online store.
