While the UK Government is keen as mustard for the Digital Switchover of TV in the UK, there’s now discussion of the impact that disposing of the analogue kit will bring on – that of further waste generation.The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) was under discussion yesterday at Westminster Hall by UK MPs.

Last week, MusicTank held a panel discussion “The F Word: Monetising Filesharing”.For once the panel (detailed below) had more members from the Internet side of things than the music industry, though Playlouder sit somewhere in between.
About a year ago a cross music industry grouping announced a new process called “Value Chain Proposition” whereby rather that sue end-users, they wanted ISPs to pay a license fee as they allowed users to file-share and that “added value” to their service and that added value had a monetary value that the music
industry should have a part of.

The security of information is always something that the government and financial institution are banging on about – pushing the responsibility of this on to the individual.Personal responsibility for your own data should be part of your every day, but it sticks in the throat when the big companies that are lecturing about personal data security then go and treat the data under their control with gay abandon.

Vodafone has shaken hands and heartily slapped besuited backs with its chums at the mobile banking service Monilink to secure a deal allowing their customers to access their bank accounts from mobile phones.Part of Vodafone’s “Internet On Your Mobile” initiative to give access to fully-featured web sites, the service will let customers with Internet enabled phones go online to check their balance, request a mini-statement and top-up their “pay as you talk” mobile phone balance.
The Monilink service is available for nowt for customers of Alliance & Leicester, First Direct and HSBC, with the Royal Bank of Scotland, NatWest and Ulster Bank joining the party later this summer.

We’ve just found out about an amazing gadget – a handheld DJ mixer called Pacemaker by a new Swedish company called Tonium.As soon as we heard about it, we were straight on the phone, as we’d been knocking around similar ideas at the Digital-Lifestyles offices.
Think of it as an iPod, with a built-in DJ mixing booth – and effects box attached.
It’s miles ahead of the clumsy iPod mixing which has been around since 2003 and, by the look of it, it will also fit into your pocket, being it’s 164mm/70mm/23mm (think PSP-sized) and 200g.

The online music social network Last.fm have announced a global deal with SONY BMG Music Entertainment to make the record company giants vast catalogue of tracks available for streaming.The deal will make Sony’s bumper-sized music catalogue available to the 20 million users of Last.fm’s online radio streaming service, with the option to buy the tracks via the music downloads store, 7digital, or through Amazon.

Barclaycard has released details of its new multi-purpose credit card that combines Oyster smartcard, credit and contactless functionalities.Expected to be launched across London this September, the three-in-one “OnePulse” card will be the first UK credit card to pack Transport for London (TfL) Oyster contactless travel pass technology, giving the capital’s commuters one less card to lug about.
