Sky Remote Record Via The InternalSky has gradually been increasing the number of ways to program your Sky+ and HD boxes to record. The latest, via the Internet, joins interactive via mobile phone and the rather convoluted mobile text message services.

In those situations where Sky subscribers find they haven’t set their boxes to record the latest episode of Celebrity Trouser Press, and can’t live without seeing it, relief will now be at hand.

By grabbing the closest (compatible) Web browser, Sky subscribers bring up the Sky site, login and take themselves to TV Listings. The next seven days of TV programming will be brought up, and, when Celebrity Trouser Press is found, by clicking on the title, the description of the programme and its options are brought up.

All that is needed to program the box is a click on Remote Record, and a subsequent confirmation to send the request to the box nestled under the TV at home.

Sky tell us that it can take up to 30 mins for the programming request to reach its destination, but it’s highly likely to be significantly quicker than that.

Sky Remote Record Via The InternalStrangely they have decided to impose a limit of 10 recording request a day via the Internet – but, in our view, anyone who need to remotely programme their box more than that needs help anyway. Those afflicted can reach for their mobile to carry on programming until their thumbs bleed.

Well that’s it. The remote programming circle is now complete. All ways to program your Sky+ box are now available … err, except the direct brain method. We await the call from Sky on that one.

TiVo: Broadband Music Deals; TiVoToGo For Mac; Emmy Award: CES 2007TiVo has been shipping their PVRs with an Ethernet port since their series 2 model, promising content delivered over broadband.

At CES this week they told the world a bit more about what they’re going to do about it.

TiVo have signed deals with both Music Choice and RealNetworks to deliver music videos and songs to their panting subscriber’s TVs starting “later in 2007.”

The Real Networks deal is self-described as a “first-of-its-kind integration of the Rhapsody digital music service with the TiVo service,” which will give TiVo subscribers access to over 3 million songs on-demand only using their TiVo remote.

TiVoToGo – the Tivo add-on service that lets subscribers burn the content they have on their TiVo to DVD and transfer it to portable devices – is now available on the Mac, a year after it was introduced for the PC.

They achieved this through a joint venture with Roxio, utilizing their Toast 8 Titanium software, letting subscribers transfer programmes either one episode at a time or automatically as soon as the TiVo DVR has recorded them.

The standard charge will be $99, but for a limited period it can be bought through the Roxio site with the bonus of getting a FREE TiVo Glo remote.

TiVo has had a pretty long path to where they are now, which at times has been a little bumpy, so we imagine there is much happiness when they heard that its Interactive Advertising Platform was presented with the Emmy Award for Outstanding Innovation and Achievement in Advanced Media Technology.

The collective ears of the advertising business must be ringing when TiVo’s CEO, Tom Rogers said, “We have proven that consumers will opt in to an advertising message if relevant and provided the ability to not miss their favorite shows.” The Ads-types will see grasp hold of this, praying that this will lead them out of the valley of (income)-death.

Orb MyCasting on Nokia N80 In US

Orb MyCasting on Nokia N80 In USOrb MyCasting has been grabbed by Nokia to be bundled in with the Nokia N80 Internet Edition, in the US only.

When US N80 owners are swanning around, they’ll be able to watch live TV, videos, listen to music and podcasts and video images on their PC. Not just that, but they can set programs to record on their PC from their mobiles.

The TV and media companies have not, to say the very least, been particularly keen on letting people do this. We’ll see if they come out against Nokia.

Back in August this year, Orb MyCasting were keen to “share”, that 19 months after the service was launched, they’ve had over 1.5m hours of digital media transfered over their service – equivalent to 125 years of media-idge. Interestingly up to 45 minutes per user per day, on average.

Orb has similar deals with companies such as AMD, Vodafone, Hauppauge, Intel and Creative Labs.

Pace Micro Shipping 1st Motorola-based PVR To ComcastGood news for UK Tech firm Pace Micro as it receives confirmation from number one US cable company, Comcast to ship combined Set Top Box (STB) and PVR.

The dual-tuner SD PVR, known as the Vegas TDC575 in the US market, has been through trials and is now being shipped out to regions (or system as Comcast call them) across the US.

This is the first time that a non-US company has shipped Motorola-based systems in to the US. Pace have been shipping Scientific-Atlanta-based boxes to the US for a while.

Fox Plays With “Blinks”: Super-Short Advertising

Clear Channel, Fox Deliver Super-Short Advertising BlinksWe’ve all known for years that PVR’s have been eating TV advertising. Murdoch has been on top of this for ages too, which makes it all the more interesting to hear that his Fox network is using 2-second Blinks, adverts. Digital Music News covers what is happening.

Clear Channel Radio realigned its advertising strategy last year by structuring shorter spots, a move designed to spark greater listener stickiness. The strategy, dubbed “Less Is More,” has now gone into overdrive with the “blink,” an incredibly short spot that runs about two seconds.

The ultra-fast slot is now being used by Fox to promote several shows, including “Prison Break,” “House,” and “The Simpsons.” The quick punch is designed to create an instant connection, and drive subsequent viewers. “Like our breakthrough programming, these spots are one-of-a-kind, and through the power of radio, they will be heard across the country,” said Kaye Bentley, senior vice president at the Fox Broadcasting Company.

Clear Channel, Fox Deliver Super-Short Advertising BlinksOverall, Clear Channel Radio has experienced mixed results following Less Is More, though recent quarters have shown positive revenue increases. Clear Channel executives have credited those jumps to the shortened advertising slots, which address a major source of radio listener irritation.

From a broader perspective, the concept is also designed to discourage listener migration towards competing formats like satellite radio subscriptions and even iPod collections. Blinks have already run for “Prison Break,” and get started for “House” and “The Simpsons” early next month.

Sky+ Remote Record: Mobile Sky+ Programming

Sky+ Remote Record: Mobile Sky+ ProgrammingDesperate to program your Sky+ PVR, while out and about? Or can’t be bothered to reach for the TV remote control when you’ve got you mobile in your hand?

Help is at hand (ha ha) as Sky announce their program-your-Sky+-box-via-your-mobile-service, that they’ve catchily named Sky+ Remote Record.

There are two ways to use the service. Either download an application to your mobile phone or via SMS on a mobile.

Remote Record
This is the comprehensive offering and only works on data-enabled 2.5G, 3G or GPRS phones.

To get setup, subscribers have to be registered via Sky Active and download the app to run on their mobiles.

From what we’ve seen it looks pretty slick, with a similar feel to the Sky EPG. It contains 7-days worth of programming listings and details on the shows.

Be aware that updating the EPG data will require updated information to be retrieved from Sky – along with corresponding data charges from your mobile operator. Beyond the mobile operators data charges, the service is free.

We’re sure you’ve guessed the basics of this already – you text the programme you want recorded from your mobile.

At the Sky-end a massive brain works out what they could have meant and sends them back a confirmation SMS, charging 25p in the process.

We’d imagine that great confusion will reign on Friday nights as the pissed up masses send their best guess at what a Television X programme might be called.

Availability
It will work with all Sky+ boxes including Sky HD, but is only available to subscribers with Sky Sports 1 & 2 and/or Sky Movies 1 & 2 in their package or be a Sky Bet customer.

Up to eight mobiles can be registered with either service per Sky+ box.

Following these mobile-focused announcements, Sky will be bringing out a similar service working over the Internet ‘over the summer.’

Sky continues to expand their application of technology to what was originally a satellite TV service.

A little bird tells us that Sky will be officially unveiling their Broadband ISP service soon. Back in October they bought EasyNet and have been busily bringing it in to the Sky fold and are planning to offer communication services, widely expected to be voice services as well.

$8Bn US Ad Income At Risk From PVRs: JupiterResearchJupiterResearch have released research that indicates that 53 percent of Digital Video Recorder (DVR)/PVR users in America have used their DVRs to skip commercials.

Amazing isn’t it? What are the other 47% doing? Have they still left the DVR in the box, yet to plug it in? Why would anyone with a DVR not want to skip through the adverts unless they weren’t in the room; had some medical condition where they weren’t able to operate the remote control; didn’t know that they could skip through adverts; worked in the advertising industry and loved it so much they wanted to see all of the advert possible; were asleep while watching TV (this is likely given the quality of what’s shown); or a handful of other implausible reasons?

Jupiter claim that there’s a potential to threaten $8 billion out of the $74 billion US TV advertising market. This is like being at the birth of TiVo all over again – but this time for the people who weren’t there/listening/believing the first time.

Quick recap on events last time – the TV companies, advertising agencies and anyone else with a vested interest then poo-poo the idea, saying it will never catch on. You may even remember some later research from Sky TV in the UK laughably saying that their research found that people watched more adverts when using their Sky+. Yes you read that right, more adverts. Clearly it was designed to stop mass panic among their many advertisers.

Their report The DVR Dilemma: Managing Consumer Behavior found that the ad-skippers watched 18 hours of television, over the normal 17 of the DVR-less. Given they’re skipping the adverts, chopping around 15-20 mins of adverts out per hours, that’s a considerable amount of more ‘entertainment.’

Is it likely that the advertising world will come back and deny it again? Probably not, just you can never tell with those wiley old birds can you? I’d expect some sort of counter spin.

Archaos AV 700 TV Mobile DVRFrench outfit Archos has launched what they claim is the first portable digital TV receiver/ recorder combining portable video recorder (PVR) functionality and two DTT (Digtial Terrestrail Television) tuners.

Sporting two antennas working in parallel and two DTT tuners, the AV 700 TV uses a ‘mobile diversity processing reception system’ which improves reception inside buildings and on the move.

The makers claim that that digital TV can be viewed in cars hurtling along at speeds up to 130 km/h [80mph] – something that isn’t possible with standard single-antenna DTT receivers.

With its 7″ (480×234 pixels, 262k colour) wide screen display, it’s a chunky gizmo which would have trouble fitting into even Fatty Arbuckle’s capacious pockets.

With its 40GB storage capacity, the AV 700 TV can squeeze in up to 35 hours of recorded digital TV programs, 130 hours of encoded videos, 400,000 photos or 20,000 songs, which should be enough to keep even the most hyperactive teenager entertained between Coke cans.

Handily, users can preset up to five different locations (e.g. home, work, pub) to avoid wearing out the retune control as they amble between transmitters.

Henri Crohas, ARCHOS CEO was well chuffed, declaring his company to be, “elated to be part of the exciting new wave of digital TV technology” and “proud to introduce a portable device for viewing and recording free digital TV in all sorts of places outside the living room.”

He then rather blotted his copy book be referring to the beautiful game as ‘soccer’, while declaring the AV 700 TV to be the “perfect gadget to watch and record the World Cup soccer championship this summer wherever you are.”

“Imagine recording a match while at work and then watching it during the nightly commute back home,” he added.

However, the AV700 is expected to available in Europe around May with pricing hovering around the €700 (£485) mark.

Nielsen To Include PVR Viewing In Ratings

Shock News -PVR Users Are Exposed To AdvertsNielsen, the top American agency that measures TV viewing audiences, is going to provide ratings that take account of time-shifted viewing through digital recording devices like TiVos even though viewers are able to, and in my experience, generally do, fast-forward through the paid for messages.

And as usual, with research funded by those that benefit, it could be worth taking several pinches of salt with this study. Some of the phraseology has strong hints of bamboozlement; the underlying message from a study conducted for the US TV networks, is that homes with PVRs and equivalents watch more commercials. Much the same came out from Sky after they introduced their Sky+ PVR.

They watch around 5.7 hours and that’s more than 10% extra when compared with the technologically-disadvantaged standard household. Their logic follows that this extra 10% of viewing, gives them more opportunity to see commercials. With PVR penetration in the USA already around 8% of the TV universe and expected to rise steadily over the coming years, this adds up to a is significant amount for media buyers.

As one would expect, media buyers remain sceptical and many have said that they will ignore the new time delay viewers.

TV is now being consumed in a variety of ways. With Apple having sold more than one million download viewings of ABC programmes, expect further challenges for the agencies, as media companies seek to measure the viewing of commercials from mobile devices, Internet and other on-demand screenings.

TiVo, Yahoo Deal Connects

TiVo, Yahoo Deal ConnectsTiVo and Yahoo are linking up to provide a reasonably extensive collaboration.

TiVo Series 2 users will be able to program their TiVo over the Web, from anywhere with an Internet connection. Simply by browsing Yahoo’s TV episode page, TiVo users will be able to click on ‘Record to my TiVo box’ to setup a record. Next time the TiVo connects to receive updates, the Yahoo service will instruct the TiVo to record the program.

Programming your Tivo over the Internet has been possible since the first generation TiVo’s, but it required the hardware upgrade of adding a network card inside your TiVo and a small amount of fiddling with software. This deal makes it a simple point and click operation.

TiVo, Yahoo Deal ConnectsWe understand that both companies see this as a cross-promotion service, so moines haven’t been exchanged. Proof of the promotion for TiVo are see at the bottom of the Yahoo page explaining the service, where non-TiVo owners are given the chance to buy a machine for $49 after rebates.

We’d imagine that the possibilities of a deal between these two companies could be quite substantial, giving Yahoo a direct connection to the living room, something they’ve had strong desires on for quite a while.

For a long time there have been a number of rumors about TiVo being bought/swollowed up by another, more in fashion (therefore more monied) company.
