YP-K5: Samsung MP3 and Speaker Combo:Video:IFADuring his keynote, Gee Sung Choi, President and CEO of Samsung announced the launch of the YP-5K, a very slick MP3 player with built-in pivoting speaker, letting you ‘entertain’ your friends or fellow train passengers.

The hinge mechanism is very neat. As it slides the silver grill of the stereo speakers is exposed. When fully expanded the front pivots, enabling the unit to be placed on a table, with the speaker angled towards the listener. Ideal for listening to. (Watch the video).

They’ve also gone to town on the visual interface, with celestial collection of glowing blue pixel, rearranging themselves to form the different icons. (Watch the video).

Make no mistake, this is a slick bit of kit, with photo display and 30 hours of playback time.

It’s going to be available in 1Gb/2Gb/4Gb capacity using solid-state Flash memory.

US pricing – $210 for 2 GB and $260 for 4 GB.

Logitech Z-10 Interactive 2.0 USB Speaker System LaunchedAlthough speakers are an essential part of any gadget lovers set up, let’s be honest: they’re a bit boring to look at.

Although some may sport a groovy metal grill or maybe an exposed speaker or two, there’s little there to catch the eye of hard core, gizmo eye-candy addicts.

Thankfully, Logitech have come to the rescue with their new USB interactive 2.0 speaker system that comes with a built-in Media display and touch sensitive controls. Woohoo! Lights and buttons – on a speaker!

Naturally, the designers have dreamt up a suitably tech sounding name for the speakers (say hello to the “Logitech Z-10 Interactive 2.0 Speaker System,” with one of the units sporting an illuminated LCD display showing digital-music track information, volume and – whoopee! – yet another clock to look at.

“Until now, PC speakers have simply delivered sound”, correctly observed Jef Holove, Logitech´s vice president of product marketing for audio.

Adjusting his hyperbole slider upwards, Holove continued, “The Z-10 speakers aim to incite more of the senses – sight, touch and sound – with their media display, touch-sensitive controls and premium audio,” adding that their new system has, “eliminated the need for people to toggle between applications to control their music on their computer monitor”.

Logitech Z-10 Interactive 2.0 USB Speaker System LaunchedWell, we actually already use one of their keyboards that does just that, but we’re sure that some folks may appreciate being able to adjust volume, treble and bass, and play, pause, skip forward and jump back through tracks from the comfort of their, err, speaker.

There’s also four Internet radio preset buttons located on the speakers’ touch sensitive panel, and there’s software support for iTunes, Windows Media Player, Winamp and Music Match, although the multimedia controls are Windows-only.

The 30w RMS USB speakers have built in amplifiers and are medium sized – 9.7 inches tall, 4.5 inches wide and 4.7 inches deep speakers – with each having an integrated 1-inch tweeter and 3-inch woofer.

The Z-10 comes with a headphone socket and a 3.5 mm auxiliary input, but with no bundled subwoofer, drum’n’bass heads looking to rattle the dentures of their neighbours with some Boeing-like bass are advised to look elsewhere.

The Logitech Z-10 Interactive 2.0 Speaker System is scheduled for a US/Europe September release, with a suggested US retail price of $149.99. No UK pricing has been announced yet.

GoGear SA9200: Philips' Nano Competitor: IFAAs we’ve all witnessed, Apple’s Nano is a beauty to both behold and hold. The whole industry has been gunning for Apple, ever since they realised that Apple had shifted the market. We’ve seen many attempts to put out devices to match or catch them, only to watch them fall by the wayside..

Today we saw the Philips GoGear Flash player and very sweet the thing is too. The same thickness of the Nano, it’s just 9cm long and weighs in at a nearly unnoticeable 48g.

It looks like they’ve done a great job on the interface, which displays rich icons. Controlling it uses their touch sensitive SuperScoll, so tapping, dragging or swiping a finger on the smooth surface is possible.

The ‘buttons’ themselves glow an attractive blue, complementing, rather than distracting the eye away from the 1.7″(4cm) colour screen, that is also able to display photos.

They reckon there’s up to 14 hours of continuous play in the battery. Unclear if that’s playing mp3s or the Windows Media DRM10 files which we suspect will need additional power to service the DRM fucntion. PlayForSure is supported, which we’re not sure is the biggest selling point.

GoGear SA9200: Philips' Nano Competitor: IFAThere’s going to be an optional docking station that works with the newly-upgraded Streamium, WiFi HiFi. Once the GoGear (a nifty name, the more you say it) is docked, its track list appears on the streamium and tunes can be played through it.

There will be two versions available; 1Gb (SA9100) and the 2Gb (SA9200), ‘at the end of summer’ (when ever that is) and will sell for €149 and €199.

Year on year, Philips really do look like they’re pulling themselves out of the old rut they had – great R&D, but terrible looking products.

Spiralfrog Offers Free Universal Music DownloadsVivendi Universal, the biggest music group on the planet have signed a deal with Spiralfrog to let surfers download the contents of its man-sized music catalogue for free.

The New York based company Spiralfrog will be launching the new service offering Universal’s songs for download in December – but in US and Canada only – bah!

As some old bloke in the pub used to tell us, “You don’t get nuffink for free in the world, no way, not ever,” and for once he was right – surfers wanting to gorge themselves on all that luvverly free music will have to endure tons of adverts, presumably of the targeted kind.

The dreadfully named Spiralfrog are looking to take on the mighty iTunes, and have high hopes that punters will be quick to switch loyalties when download prices of nuppence are whispered in their shell-likes, compared to Apple’s current rate of 99 cents per song in the US.

“Offering young consumers an easy-to-use alternative to pirated music sites will be compelling,” enthused Spiralfrog Chief Executive Robin Kent said.

With an estimated forty dodgy downloads to every legal download over the Internet, Spiralfrog could attract the huge number of users currently risking prosecution from pirate file-swapping services, making their money by sharing income from advertising with content partners like Universal.

Amongst the music industry cognoscenti, a few eyebrows have raised about the practicalities of the new service, with music industry specialist Josh Lawler telling the BBC: “The Internet is very much a viable media, but the trick is going to be getting it off the ground in the first place”.

“Spiralfrog will have to find a way to pay artists from the advertising dollars they are generating. But they’re not necessarily going to know how many advertising dollars there are and so some artists are going to be hesitant about it,” he added.

If Spiralfrog does get it right, the company could seriously shake up a market that saw 60 million MP3 players sold and 420 million single tracks downloaded last year.

Google Music Trends in GTalkWhen upgrading their Instant messaging (IM) and VoIP software released earlier this week, Google has taken the opportunity to introduce a new feature – Music Trends.

The idea of letting people know what music you are and have been listening to has been around for a long time, with bloggers using various plug-ins to show the information on their blogs.

Through Google Talk, Google have taken it to an even more immediate level. With the latest version of the software on their machines and switching on the option, people who are listed as your friends within GTalk can see the music that you’re listening to at that moment, displayed on the status line.

It currently works with four pieces of music playing software iTunes; Winamp; Windows Media Player and Yahoo Music Engine, with is anticipated that more will be supported soon.

Google say it’s an interesting way to discover new music, which we’re sure has nothing to do with one of the other features of GTalk, file transfer – “cool tune, man, can you IM it over?” Surely not. Would be a great way to get people buying music, through a long rurmoured Google Music-buying site though wouldn’t it?

Google are also grabbing all of the information of which tracks are being played and compiling them in to a chart of top songs, broken down into genre and country (only USA currently).

We can just hear the clatter of keyboards as memos shoot around record companies insisting that all of the employees load up the software, and play the latest boy band that they’re trying to promote.

Sony Mylo Wi-Fi Media Player Introduced

Sony Introduces Mylo Wi-Fi Media PlayerSony has released details of the Mylo, a groovy new Wi Fi-enabled personal communications device aimed at Instant Messaging nutters.

Available in black or white, the curvy handheld comes with 1GB of built-in flash memory and features a slide out QWERTY keypad, 802.11b Wi-Fi and three free instant messaging services pre-installed.

A cringe worthy video on the Sony site declaring the Mylo to be the “the easiest, raddest broadband device” makes it clear who this device is aimed at: dA K1dZ.

Instant Messaging
With Skype, Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk onboard, Sony is hoping to attract Instant Messaging addicts, although with only Wi-Fi connectivity and no SIM cards onboard, users are going to need to find free wireless networks to enjoy the fun.

The device ships with JiWire’s hotspot directory, which lists more than 20,000 WiFi networks across the US (but nowt for UK users), and there’s an avatar-enabled “What’s Up” screen which lets users check the online status of up to 90 friends.

Sony Introduces Mylo Wi-Fi Media PlayerFor teens who, like, don’t find email too slow for their hyperactive needs, there’s also an e-mail client, compatible with services such as Yahoo! Mail and the Gmail web mail service.

So long as there’s a free Wi-Fi connection within range (not always an option here in Britland), the Mylo looks to be a capable wireless device, offering predictive typing, the excellent Opera Mini browser, and a fun option to share playlists and stream songs between other Mylo users.

Sporting a 320 by 240 pixel 2.4-inch LCD screen, the handheld offers a full suite of multimedia support (music, videos and photos) with a Memory Stick Pro Duo slot allowing up to 4GB of extra storage (Sony is set to introduce a 4GB Memory Stick this month for $170).

There’s also a built in speaker for annoying bystanders, with the Mylo supporting MP3, ATRAC, WMA (inc DRM stuff), MP4 (Advanced Simple Profile) and JPEGs formats.

This drops to just three hours when the Mylo is used for Skype telephone calls – mere moments for teenagers.

The device comes with a microphone, stereo headphones, a USB cable and a neoprene case and is expected to retail for around $350 (~£183, ~e272) in September.

Oh, and the name ‘Mylo’ supposedly stands for “my life online,” in case you were wondering.

Boxon MP3 Player Bolts On VoIPWhen it comes to convergence, we’re always on the look out for shiny new smartypants devices, even if we’re not always totally convinced about their usefulness.

A good case in point is the new Boxon VoIP gadget from Korean electronics manufacturers Hyunwon (who are better known as Mobiblu).

As the name suggests, the Boxon is an MP3 player a VoIP telephony system built in, letting you plug it into any Internet-connected PC and start talking for free.

To get chatting, simply slam the player into any available USB port on a desktop or laptop PC, and then the (unspecified) VoIP software should automatically load up on the host computer.

Boxon MP3 Player Bolts On VoIPOf course, the idea of a converged MP3 player/VoIP device isn’t a new one – in fact, we wrote about a very similar device, the Ezmax EZMP4200P VoIP MP3 Player, way back in March 2005.

The wave of disinterest that followed that particular product announcement suggests that perhaps the public aren’t quite yet ready to shell out for VoIP MP3 players that need to be plugged into a computer before you can start chatting.

As a MP3 player, the Boxon looks to be a fairly middle of the road affair too, sporting a 1.71-inch full colour OLED display, with e-book reading, video playback, photo viewing, and an English-Korean dictionary.

We’ve no idea if (or when) this thing is going to be arriving in Europe, and we can’t say we’re particvularly bothered either because, well, it’s a rubbish idea, isn’t it?

Internet Killed The TOTP StarTo a long, long fanfare that we began to fear would never end, Top of the Pops, the world’s longest-running weekly music show, was finally killed off last night.

A classic example of how the Internet is changing consumer’s habits, the once High Priest of Pop found its viewers tumbling as music fans flocked to the Web for the latest tunes, news and videos.

Despite being a major landmark on the UK music map for what seems like centuries, a new generation of impatient, tech-savvy and Web-connected listeners were hardly likely to warm to a format that only offered a distilled breakdown of chart acts once a week.

Why wait?
Way back when we were lads, music delivery on demand wasn’t quite the slick operation it is now, with music starved teens reduced to hanging about in smelly phone boxes, dialling ‘160’ and shoving in their 2p’s to hear a crackly rendition of the song of the day (which you hoped wasn’t the Wombles).

But kids today – spoilt rotten!

Thanks to the Internet, music lovers can now instantly gorge themselves on zillions of new tunes through social networking sites like MySpace, immerse themselves in vast oceans of songs on pay-per-download sites like iTunes or smuggle in tune booty from pirate sites like SoulSeek.

With this kind of personal music delivery, the days of families sitting around the gogglebox for a weekly fix of pre-programmed music entertainment are long gone, with music fans able to listen to music whenever they feel like it, via their computers, mobile phones, iPods and media players.

Internet Killed The TOTP StarThe figures back up the story too, with a recent survey revealing that people spend longer on the Internet than watching television, with the audience for Top of the Pops crashing to around a million viewers from its once-lofty peak of more than 15 million.

Meanwhile MTV are still battling on with the launch of a community-style site at MTV.co.uk followed by a new channel called Flux which will let viewers control what is aired on the station, and offer live chat with other users

Aimed at challenging the big-boy social networking sites like MySpace and Bebo, MTV are hoping their new product will appeal to the wired generation.

Angel Gambino, vice president of commercial strategy and digital media at MTV Networks UK & Ireland told Reuters, “If audiences are spending more time away from the TV it is important for us to make sure we have a really compelling product.”

“It’s critical to our success to make that transition from a broadcasting company to a multiplatform media company,” she added.

Whether MTV’s new interactive TV service will manage to make inroads into a music market increasingly driven by the Internet remains to be seen, but it’s clear that traditional heavyweights like record labels and MTV are very unlikely to enjoy the domination enjoyed in the past.

Microsoft Zune Targets Apple's iPodsAfter an eternity of denials, obfuscation, rumour and counter-rumour, Microsoft have finally confirmed that they will be launching their own rival to Apple’s iPod range.

In a statement late last week, the company said, “Today we confirmed a new music and entertainment project called Zune. Under the Zune brand, we will deliver a family of hardware and software products, the first of which will be available this year. We see a great opportunity to bring together technology and community to allow consumers to explore and discover music together.”

This announcement posits Zune as a brand name for an entire family of hardware and software products, supported by music, movie and media services, much like Apple’s iPod, iTunes and iTunes Music Store offering.

Microsoft Zune Targets Apple's iPodsBillboard Magazine, who broke the story, has speculated that the Zune-branded range of products will include music players, video players, WiFi-enabled devices and possibly even a portable video game device, with Microsoft incorporating social networking and mobile media purchasing.

The first Zune device (which may or may not look like the one illustrated) is scheduled to be launched late this year ready for Christmas, with further devices following in 2007.

Because we’re all being strung along by Microsoft’s teaser campaign, details are still very sketchy (like the illustrations on the site) although some rumours suggest that there’ll be a 30GB Zune with the “same pricing, look and feel as the 60GB iPod,” with Wi-Fi functionality letting users share music with up to 10 nearby chums.

Samsung Releases P200 Unlicensed Mobile Access HandsetYeah, we know: it’s another ruddy phone from Samsung who seem to have a new mobile on the market every tea break, but this one is actually a bit different – honest!

In fact, their shiny new SGH-P200 handset has the honour of being the world’s first commercially available UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) mobile phone.

This new fangled UMA technology lets roaming types enjoy seamless handovers between cellular networks and fixed IP networks (that’s Wi-Fi hotspots to you and me) while the user is on the move.

This means the Samsung P200 can freely switch between GSM, GPRS, EDGE and wireless LAN networks (Wi-Fi), letting users take advantage of high-speed (and often free) voice and data communication where available.

Compare this to the current breed of Wi-Fi-only phones where users have to stay lurking within wireless zones or risk losing their connection.

It’s a fully featured handset too, with a 1.3 mega pixel camera, 1.9 inch 176 x 220px 262K colour TFT screen, picture messaging (MMS), a camcorder and 80MB of embedded memory.

The P200 also comes with a music player for MP3 / AAC / ACC+ files, a MPEG4 / H.263 video player and file viewer functions, but, curiously enough, no Bluetooth (or IR for that matter).

The phone is first being released in Italy with the rest of Europe to follow soon.
