Relavant Events
The event took place at the T-Bar in the Tea Buildings in Shoreditch on Wednesday 15 Aug 2007. It was meant to start at 7pm but given the long queue at the door, the start was delayed.
Since Facebook made itself a development platform, people or companies can create applications to run on it. The Developers Garages events are organised by local folk with the assistance of Facebook (the company). They’re spring up around the world as developers try to suss out if there’s an opportunity.

On Thu 5th July Nominet (the domain registry for .uk) held an open day for registrars (people who register domains). This was a chance for Nominet to explain what they do, and what services are available currently and what will be introduced in the future.

Last week, MusicTank held a panel discussion “The F Word: Monetising Filesharing”.
For once the panel (detailed below) had more members from the Internet side of things than the music industry, though Playlouder sit somewhere in between.
About a year ago a cross music industry grouping announced a new process called “Value Chain Proposition” whereby rather that sue end-users, they wanted ISPs to pay a license fee as they allowed users to file-share and that “added value” to their service and that added value had a monetary value that the music
industry should have a part of.

A headphone-style set that allows you to compare your sporting progress with a virtual competitor.
Many sports are possible, but let’s use running as an example. You and a friend decide on a running route, each time you run it, the relative position of your friends previous time is relayed into your ears, “He’s way ahead of you,” or “You’re neck and neck,” etc.

This goes beyond the simplicity of smell-o-vision, to a far more deeper, emotional level. Using smells to associate to emotions, providing powerful triggers.
16 essential oils, extracted from around Berlin (in this example usage) are held in the device. When a smell is needed to be generated, they are passed down a syringe tip to a piezo-electric disc and then atomised.
One example used – instead of constantly checking your email, a ‘key’ smell is generated, so the person using it ‘feel’ like it’s time to check their email – triggered by the released smell.
We’re trying a new format with these RCA pieces. Rather than have text dominated reporting, we’re going to have the audio and picture do the speaking. Let us know what you think of the new approach.

I know it sounds crazy, but we just stumbled over it while at the RCA 2007 show.

Adrian Westaway’s project, Magic Light, lets you guide a light to a different location merely by waving your hands in the direction you want to move the light.
The lack of ‘interface’ means that there’s no age restriction, as using it is as simple as moving your hand around.

We attended the end of year show for the Royal College of Art (RCA) and were highly impressed with a lot of it.
While I personally thought that the fine art side of the exhibition was too safe and ultimately unexciting – it felt like they were all being too conscious of trying to ‘make it’ – the work in the Great Exhibition tent was very stimulating – bright minds tackling issues that are just ahead of current issues, and a few, a long way off.

A little bird has told us that they have received an email from Christer Holloman of … shock, horror … First Tuesday. It’s time to sell up and ship out of any and all Internet-touching businesses as Christer tells all that they are to carry out a “secret launching event in London after the summer.”
First Tuesday, the Bastard child of Nick Denton (See picture) and a couple of others, quickly became a byword for greed in London back at the end on the ’90’s.
