Well, last Wednesday saw the Mobile Clubbing flashmob descend Liverpool Street Station on the East side of London, as flagged by Helen Keegan (Technokitten).

From the photos and the videos, it looks like it was pretty well attended, with what was estimated as a thousand people.

Come 19:24 they started dancing to their own music, leading to the individual, random gyrations that you can make out on the video – with the added strangeness that there’s no music playing, as everyone has headphones on. James A White goes into more detail.

Google Signs Up With Sony & Warners To Offer Free Music VideosGoogle will soon be offering free music videos on its Google video Web site after striking a deal with industry bigwigs, Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group.

The deal will see the search engine giant – which has just scooped up the video sharing sensation, YouTube for $1.65bn – offering users the ability to stream content from Warner Music and Sony BMG music video collections for nowt.

There will also be behind-the-sceens footage and other artist-related content made available through two separate revenue-sharing arrangements.

Google’s advertisers will sponsor the music video offerings, with the resulting booty being split between Google and its content partners.

As well as the freebie video content, Google will also be flogging Warner music video downloads for US$1.99 a pop.

DiddyTV: YouTube Gains A Paying Partner

In true online video blog style, the announcement was made by Mr Diddy (not one of Ken Dodd’s little friends), but differing from the norm, he’s filmed walking in to a Burger King and happens to drop their catch phrase a couple of times while order his burger to “have it his way”.

Interestingly Mr Diddy says that he’s going to “Buy a channel on YouTube,” so we’re assuming that there’s money involved, especially as Mr Diddy refers to “The Contract” in his video piece.

Also of note, is that Mr Diddy has his own URL on YouTube – YouTube.com/diddyTV – certainly the first that we’ve seen that uses such a short form.

Details of the deal between Mr Diddy and Burger King haven’t been disclosed, but we’d imagine that it’s going to be worth more that a couple of orders at their stores, even if his entourage are ordering large.

Of course, this big step up by Mr Diddy has absolutely nothing to do with the new album that he’s releasing this month and is cunningly blip-cut into his video pieces.

We attribute much of Mr Diddy’s knowledge and acceptance of YouTube down to Ryan Leslie, who is part of Mr Diddy’s posse (which we believe is the common parlance). Ryan has been using MySpace and YouTube for a long time to promote himself, his label Next Selection (for life) and his artists like Cassie. We’ve spoken about his work in many consultancy sessions that we’ve done with media companies – and frankly have great regard for the way he’s used the medium, such as his idea to get people to post their own lip-sync video on YouTube.

The absolute proof of this is Mr Diddy’s message to Ryan saying that he’d “finally talked him into it,” asking him to send over some of his friends to Mr Diddy’s Myspace. To show how these things roll, you’ll note that Mr Diddy doesn’t have Ryan in his Top 16 friends on his MySpace. You may also note that Mr Diddy has had over 10m plays of his tracks – some 4m of which for Come To Me, that was produced by Ryan Leslie. Where’s the friendship?

Google interested in buying YouTube?
Over the weekend there has been much chatter about YouTube being bought by Google, after it was rumoured by the WSJ. The figure banded around was $1.6Bn.

This would be the most expensive purchase that Google has made. Up until now they’ve been very smart and picked up other compaies at early stages for relative small change. The rumored figure for Blogger was $30m.

Google Video hasn’t been the boon that they had hoped it was going to be. Buying YouTube will take Google into the forefront of serving video online and with the $10Bn they’ve got in the bank, not an unfeasible amount for them to pay for it. When put into historical context, it appears a pretty cheap price – don’t forget that Yahoo paid $7.5Bn for broadcast.com back in the Web 1.0 days.

Samsung X838 Ultra Compact Phone/MP3 PlayerLooking like lovechild of a bedtime romp between an iPod and a mobile phone, Samsung’s X838 phone has real “gimme!” appeal.

Folded up, it looks like a conventional compact MP3 player, complete with a 128 x 220 pixels 26k colour screen and a control scroll wheel clearly ‘inspired’ by Messrs I and Pod.

Turning the device into a phone is simply a case of swivelling the pull out screen through 180 degrees to reveal the phone keys lurking below.

Samsung X838 Ultra Compact Phone/MP3 PlayerBecause of the narrow, slimline construction, the number keys are unusually arranged in rows of two, with the usual ‘call’ and ‘end call’ buttons at the top.

We’re not sure if closing the screen ends the call or if the thing is spring loaded, but either way the phone looks great to us.

Unlike many botched attempts at converging mobiles with music players, this one manages a pretty good likeness to a ‘proper’ MP3 player, with the colourful display offering track information and album art.

Samsung X838 Ultra Compact Phone/MP3 PlayerThere’s also an easily accessible ‘hold’ button so you don’t end up ringing your Mum when you’re rocking out to Pantera, as well as a volume up/down control on the side of the unit.

Inside, there’s 1GB of internal memory for storing tunes as well as a 1.3Mpix onboard camera and a sneaking suspicion that it also plays videos.

We couldn’t see any sign of an expansion slot, which is a bit of a shame, nor any reference to battery life (with something as small as this, we’re figuring it’s not going to be that long).

Also bundled in with the Bluetooth-enabled X838 is an alarm clock, recording functionality and a Java game.

Whatever colours the thing comes in, it looks like a great phone to us: ultra-small, compact, cool and with a fun interface, which only leaves one question. When can we have one please?

Warner Music Strikes Deal With YouTubeWarner Music Group has announced a deal with YouTube to distribute music videos, as well as extras such as band interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and artist rockumentaries.

Warner Music’s vast music video library is set to become available with the launch of YouTube’s new content identification and royalty reporting system later this tear.

This comes with reporting and tracking tools to monitor music and video royalties, with YouTube claiming it can automatically identify copyrighted music and video content being uploaded to the site.

The companies hope that this new system will help YouTube get on top of the copyright issues that go hand in hand with video-sharing sites, with uploading punters rarely bothered about seeking the approval of copyright owners.

Uniquely, the system can also grant permission to other YouTube users to use any music from the WMG portfolio within their own videos, although we’re not sure if this will be made available for free or not.

Advertising revenue
YouTube and Warners plan to start sharing advertising revenue generated from running ads “on both WMG music videos and user uploaded videos that incorporate audio and audiovisual works from WMG’s catalog.”

Commenting on the partnership, Warner Music boss Edgar Bronfman said: “Consumer-empowering destinations like YouTube have created a two-way dialogue that will transform entertainment and media forever.”

Warner Music Strikes Deal With YouTube“As user-generated content becomes more prevalent, this kind of partnership will allow music fans to celebrate the music of their favourite artists, enable artists to reach consumers in new ways, and ensure that copyright holders and artists are fairly compensated,” he continued.

Chad Hurley, YouTube’s CEO was clearly an excited chap: “By providing a new distribution opportunity, we are paving the way for media companies to harness the vast financial potential of user-generated content on YouTube. We are thrilled that WMG had the vision to be the first music company, in partnership with its artists, to support the use of their content within user videos and to allow our community to interact with WMG music in new creative ways.”

Legal issues looming?
Of course, his gushing enthusiasm could also be seen an expression of relief as his company finally secures a big name backer to help pay off what must be truly formidable bandwidth bills.

He may also be facing some big legal bills too, as circling record company sharks look set to bite soon over alleged copyright infringements.

Doug Morris, head honcho of Universal Music, the world’s biggest music company, gave his sabre an extra long rattle in the direction of YouTube last week, saying, “We believe these new businesses are copyright infringers and owe us tens of millions of dollars. How we deal with these companies will be revealed shortly.”

With that kind of old fashioned refusal to try and work with new technology that can’t be uninvented, it looks like we might be in for another epic Napster vs The Man-type battle all over again.

Apple iTV Device Pre-AnouncedApple has for once pre-announced a new product, codenamed iTV (which is unlikely to be the final name as they’d get sued in the UK for a start).

This is a media playback unit (about the same dimensions of a Mac Mini but half the height). It has a multitude of connectors on the back (audio and various video including HDMI). It connects to the network over wireless and can stream movies, music, video, photos, podcastsfrom iTunes or from Apple.com/iTunes store.

It will be available in Q1 2007 for $199.

New Apple iPods Launched: Nano and Shuffle

It's Apple ShowtimeIn the UK, the iTunes music store was closed all day yesterday for refurbishment, with a black screen just saying ‘Showtime.’ At about 6pm (UK time) Steve Jobs announced why. There’s a slew of new/updated iPods and more content on the store as well as version 7 of iTunes for Mac and Windows (more on this later).

iPods get another makeover
All the iPods are being updated, from the video iPod down to the shuffle.

The video iPod now comes in two versions, 30GB and 80GB (£189 inc VAT and £259 respectively). They have a new screen that’s 60% brighter and more vibrant. As well as playing videos and music, viewing photos and the normal iPod features, games can be downloaded from the iTunes store (£3.99) and played on all 5th generation+ iPods. The battery life has been increased and with the 30GB iPod lasting 14 hours and the 80GB 20 hours (for music, that drops to 6.5 hours for video, but long enough for a couple of films).

The new Nanos come in 2, 4 and 8GB (£99, £129 and £169). Apple has gone all retro and reverted back to the mini design in that they now have an aluminum case in a variety of colours (sliver, pink, blue, green and black). It’s thinner than the 1st generation Nano. They now have 24 hours battery life.

It's Apple ShowtimeBoth the Nano and iPod video now have search features so that albums can be searched for etc., using the click wheel (with on-screen letters and search criteria). Gapless playback is a new feature, so songs can be played continuously without the normal two second wait between songs. There’s no beat matching yet, but maybe that’s Apple’s next enhancement so DJ’s will be out of a job.

The new shuffle (1GB, £55) is tiny and again in retro silver aluminum. It’s about 1 inch long (and almost square) and has a built-in clip (well the back is a clip).

Apple iTunes 7 Revamped With Films For USiTunes 7 is now available for download. The indexing has been improved, as has navigation by re-organising the Library and other indexes that normally appear on the left hand side. If iTunes is linked to an account on the iTunes store, it can now download artwork for any music on your system. Searching is also easier, as both music and video can be searched by viewing the artwork and then seeing what’s available in say that album.

Gapless play is supported, but iTunes may take a while to index your music library.

Music can now easily be transferred between authorised computers (work and home PC) by plugging in an iPod, sync the iPod at home and when plugged in at work, the content is synced to the work PC FROM the iPod.

The music store now holds movies, these cost $9.99 for library content (i.e. older releases) and $14.99 for new movies (now released on the same day as the DVD release). If pre-ordered or in the 1st week of release, they’re discounted to $12.99. Content is available from Disney, Touchstone, Pixar and Miramax.

The games available are Tetris, Mahjong and Mini Golf from Electronic Arts, Pac-Man from Namco, Cubis-2 from FlashGames, Bejewelled and Zuma from PopCap and Texas Hold’em and Vortex from Apple, each costs £3.99.

Unfortunately movies and TV shows are still only available in the US, but Apple hope to have them available in the UK in early 2007.

The TrekStor MP3-RadioStation plugs in to the cigarette lighter slot (or cigar if you’re posh), which means it’s easy to find and there’s no need for a separate power source.

This arrangement brings the advantage of low cost expansion and that the music storage is only limited by the size and number of memory sticks you’ve got.

Navigating tracks up, down and pausing is done by the button on the top.

To get over the challenge of getting the audio between the player and legacy car head-units, TrekStor have used low-powered FM transmission with a selectable frequency, available to some other players as an after-market add on.

To set it up, simply press the Channel button on the top of the MP3-RadioStation until an FM frequency that isn’t used by a radio station is displayed on the top, then tune your car stereo into that frequency. Bingo.

TrekStor MP3-RadioStation: IFA 2006Sadly for UK users, devices like this can’t be used legally, as Ofcom don’t differentiate between low-power gadgets such as this that transmit over a short distance and a full blown radio station.

Expected release date is November 2006, priced at around €15.

MySpace To Offer Pay-For Music Download Service

MySpace To Offer Pay-For Music Download ServiceIn a move that was as unexpected as night following day, MySpace has finally revealed plans to introduce its own music downloads service before the end of the year.

According to the Financial Times, the company plans to offer non copy protected MP3 tracks of unsigned acts music for download, with MySpace charging “a small” (but undisclosed) fee for the sale.

MySpace will be shifting the tunes through a partnership with Snocap, a technology company started by Shawn Fanning, the creator of Napster.

Details are still a tad murky, but it seems that bands and labels will be able to sell songs online for whatever price they want.

MySpace To Offer Pay-For Music Download ServiceNow the most visited site in the US, MySpace boasts millions of users with the site already established as an essential part of any new band’s online promotional activities.

“Instead of going to iTunes and searching for music, which happens once in a while,” commented Tom Anderson, head honcho of MySpace, “you can see the band and buy their music.”

Interestingly, the company has decided to sell songs in the non-rights managed (unprotected) MP3 format.

MySpace To Offer Pay-For Music Download ServiceThis gets around Apple’s stubborn refusal to licence their FairPlay digital rights management system to third parties, letting music fans play purchased tracks on their iPods.

MySpace is hoping that their downloads service will eventually encourage more established artists onto the service, although industry insiders suspect that many may feel reluctant about offering their tunes in a non-protected format.

MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolf told Reuters: “The goal is to be one of the biggest digital music stores out there. Everyone we’ve spoken to definitely wants an alternative to iTunes and the iPod. MySpace could be that alternative.”
