AlertMe Raise £8m Funding
Today we’ve had notice that AlertMe, a UK company that develops and sells alarm systems, has raised £8m in series B funding.
Good Energies, Index Ventures, SET Venture Partners and VantagePoint Venture Partners were the investors.
EU Cuts Euro Roaming Charges
The European Union has laid out a new set of rules for mobile phone users wandering over the hills and plains of Europe in a move that should see bills slashed by around 60 per cent.
Anyone who’s used their mobile phone in Europe will have experienced the pain of the wallet draining bill when you get home, but the new rules will see text message charges cut to €0.11 (before VAT), a substantial reduction on the current €0.28 rate.
Apple Unveil iPhone 3GS Handset
Apple has announced the latest update to its hugely successful iPhone range at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.
The new iPhone 3GS offers several new features and upgrades, including onboard memory capacity doubled to 32GB, voice activated dialling, MMS messaging, 3-megapixel camera, a digital compass, Tom Tom compatibility and – finally – the ability to record videos and copy and paste text.

Palm’s make-or-break new Pre handset launched over the weekend in the States, and we’ve been trawling through the reviews to see how’s the new handset has gone down.
Overall, it seems that the phone has been very well received, gaining plaudits for its interface, operating system and form factor, although not everyone likes the keyboard and there’s been some doubts about the battery life and the lack of available apps.

It may seem that the entire online world is always banging on about Twitter, but research from web security firm Purewire suggests that not everyone may be feeling the Twitter-love.
The company evaluated the profiles of millions of Twitter users to show off the abilities of their new Tweet Grade web tool (unfortunately, their website appears to be down at the moment so we can’t tell you anything about what it does).
PCW Magazine Closes: End Of An Era: UPDATED
A piece of UK computing history has fallen by the wayside today.
It is with great sadness that we heard that PCW, Personal Computer World magazine is to close.
This magazine defined UK home computing during the ’80s.
Launching as a self-build hobbyest title in 1978, it soon adapted to what were then called micro-computers – Sinclair’s ZX80, BBC micro, etc.
We’re talking early days here, when “What sort of sort” routine you should use was a heavily debated subject and a computer getting colour graphics was front cover news.

Pirate Bay Party Wins Swedish EU Seat and Funding For Germany Wing
Pirate Party International, the political party closely linked to The Pirate Bay file sharing site, have won a Swedish seat in the European Election and are reporting “significant results” in Germany.
In Sweden they (Piratpartiet) gained 7.1% of the votes, Which they claim makes them “the largest party in the segment below 30 years of age.”

Channel 4 is set to become the first UK broadcaster to slap its back catalogue online, completely free of charge,
From next month, Channel 4 will add some 4,000 hours of the channel’s archived content to the 4oD catchup service – making something like 10,000 programme titles available.
