Punters looking to use their shiny new iPhones on different networks might want to think again after Apple released a statement warning that unlocked phones will “most likely” become “permanently inoperable”
Although iPhones are currently exclusively tied into AT&T’s network in the States (and O2 in the UK), several unofficial hacks swiftly appeared on the web offering to unlock the phones to work on any network.

The globe spanning conglomerate that is Fox Interactive Media has today announced that it wants to get inside your phone with the launch of its ad-supported mobile Internet version of MySpace.
When it comes to Wi-Fi, London is the big cheese of wireless connectivity according to mobile services firm iPass.
iPass’s new research found that London had the highest level of hotspot use by business folks, with four times as many besuited Wi-Fi sessions than the number two and three cities, New York and Chicago.

US company, Monsoon Multimedia is being taken to court for violating the terms of the open source NGU General Public License (GPL) of the BusyBox project.
This is the first time this has happened in the US, as previous infringements have been sorted out through correspondence and talking. Having been through this process already and not getting the desired outcome, the SFLC (Software Freedom Law Center) feels there is on option by to pursue it through the US courts.

When you’re preparing a newspaper for the world of on-line news, helping your audience find the information they need is paramount.
Anders M Olausson, CTO of hd.se (a local Swedish newspaper/site) ponders the problem.
According to Google only 1% of the searches uses “advanced search”. It’s a remarkable low figure if you think about how tough some people think it is to find what they are looking for. But then it struck me, is it advanced to use “Advanced search”? Not particularly.

Camera and video
The onboard 2MP camera produced reasonable enough results although the accompanying thunderous shutter sound effect is likely to startle sleeping babies and send nearby cattle stampeding. We sure it’s in there somewhere, but we couldn’t find a way to turn the ruddy thing off.

Recently Seagate announced several new and updated disk models and systems.
Pretty difficult to get excited about hard drives, but hey, let’s give it a go.
Seagate is probably the leading disk manufacturer and is a profitable business (several disk companies have merged or died in recent years), but Seagate looks to still be going strong and innovating in various areas.

In part one we took a look at the Palm Treo 500v’s ergonomics and form factor, and in part two we’ll see how it shapes up as a phone.
Booting up the Treo for the first time took around 30 seconds, with a succession of logos appearing on screen: first the Palm logo, followed by Vodafone’s animated feast of redness and finally the Window Mobile branding.
