Nokia’s keenly awaited N97 touchscreen handset looks to have its UK launch date confirmed, with the e-retailer Play.com posting up a pre-order page on their site.
The site lists a release date of March 31st, 2009 for the Nokia N97 with a decidedly upmarket unlocked.sin free price of GBP 479.99 (US$707), with free shipping.
Nokia’s second S60-based touchscreen smartphone, the N97 was announced late last year at Nokia World in Barcelona, and packs a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and dual-LED flash, a generous touchscreen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
Nokia Product Managers have been unofficially quoted as saying that an American version will follow not long after the European release.
It’s certainly a tasty looking phone, serving up a 5MP camera with auto focus, Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash; 3.5 inch TFT 640 x 360 pixels touchscreen display; Flash video support; Quad-band GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900; A-GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA connectivity, internal GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth; 32 GB internal memory and MicroSD card support up to 16GB.
Other goodies include Nokia Maps 2.0 Touch, 3.5 mm audio output jack, handwriting recognition, accelerometer, digital compass and a MP3 / WMA / WAV / eAAC+ player.
When it was announced in December, some media pundits were describing it as a potential ‘iPhone killer’ but after the technological bombshell of Palm’s stunning new Pre phone, we’d say Nokia might have to set their sights a little higher.
