John - Love the idea of having a mission to actively destroy the Microsoft brand - the other brands acting as a parasite of the Microsoft host, until they've sucked it dry.

In the minds of those within Microsoft it would go against every impulse they've ever had - but it's so crazy, it might just work.

Hey ... what if they dropped the Microsoft brand in favour of Yahoo?

Won't work. Microsoft's brand is permanently damaged, but for some reason Microsoft doesn't realize this. (???) This purchase just plays into Microsoft's image as an aspiring monopolist and it does not sit well with the end customer. The very second, and I mean the very second anybody (including Google) has a product that is slightly better, customers will switch; people are using Microsoft just hoping to switch.

Zune has a chance because customers can disassociate it somewhat from Microsoft, just because of the new brand. The way to go is to creative destruction - Microsoft MUST create a new brand based on new management structure, philosophy, everything whose soul purpose is to destroy Microsoft. This is the only way that Microsoft will survive the next 100 years.
